Main street winston salem news12/31/2023 ![]() Each element is drawn, its own momentum magnetized, into the wider whole. ![]() Gradually the parts find each other–the martial fanfare, the vigorous trot, the sweet obligato, the sweeping major melody. The work opens rather with an adumbration of the individual parts, which will compose the whole: fragments of waltz themes, scattered over a brooding stillness. Schorske gives an impressive characterization of the piece, viewing it as a metaphor for the “violent death of the nineteenth-century world”:Īlthough Ravel celebrates the destruction of the world of the waltz, he does not initially present that world as unified. The pulse is further colored by fragments of melodies and washes of orchestral sound. La valse begins with low-pitched instruments, setting a sinister tone as the pulse of the triple-meter dance is established. Versions of La valse also exist for solo piano and for two pianos, although it is not entirely clear as to whether these preceded or followed the orchestral version. Ida Rubinstein, for whom Ravel composed his Boléro, staged La valse as a ballet in Paris on May 23, 1929, but the piece is still more commonly heard on concert programs. La valse received a concert performance with Camille Chevillard conducting the Lamoureux Orchestra on Decemto considerable critical acclaim. This rejection precipitated a permanent break between Ravel and Diaghilev. Yet, as Erik Satie observed: “Ravel refuses the Legion of Honor, but all of his music accepts it.” Unfortunately, the impresario, Sergei Diaghilev, with whom Ravel and so many other important composers (including Stravinsky) had worked, refused to accept La valse as a ballet, calling it a “masterpiece,” but more a “portrait of a ballet” than a scenario for a ballet proper. Ravel’s refusal to accept the Legion of Honor in 1920 is further evidence of his single-minded independent spirit. Interestingly, Ravel refused to join his colleagues in endorsing an official French ban on modern German and Austrian music during the war, asserting, according to Arbie Orenstein, that “the best way to defend French music would be for French composers to write good music” (Ravel: Man and Musician, New York, 1975). ![]() As for the war (Ravel served in the French army as a truck driver), it seems entirely plausible that this experience caused the composer to see the Viennese waltz in a different light. Letters from the end of 1919, when Ravel was finishing La valse, bear witness to his continuing grief. The death of Marie Delouart Ravel on Janucame as a devastating blow from which the composer would in some respects never recover. Aside from its purely musical evolution, one also ought to take into account the impact of two tragedies–one personal and the other global–the death of the composer’s mother, and the First World War. The work we know as La valse (The Waltz), choreographic poem for orchestra, completed in 1920, underwent many changes since its initial conception in 1906 under the provisional title (by 1914) of Wien (Vienna), “an apotheosis of the Viennese waltz, linked in my mind with the impression of a fantastic whirl of destiny” and homage to Johann Strauss. Symphonic poem or ballet? Virtuoso work for piano or orchestral show piece? Sentimental reminiscence of Imperial Vienna or frenetic dance of death? La valse has at one time or another represented all of these things, and more. The work was last performed by the Winston-Salem Symphony on January 7, 8, with Peter Perret conducting. It is orchestrated for piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, glockenspiel, 2 harps, and strings. La valse had its first performance in Paris with Camille Chevillard conducting the Lamoureux Orchestra on December 12, 1920. Maurice Ravel was born Maof parents of Swiss and Basque descent in Ciboure, Basses-Pyrénées.

Vintage vinyl record store day12/31/2023 ![]() ![]() FOREVERVOICELESS will be a clear vinyl release on 22nd April. The wordless edition may remove the largely present, most overt delivery of the album’s existentialist musings that is Eno’s narration ( The Garden Of Stars won’t be as sinister without his Gregorian chant We Let It In will not be quite as stirring for its omission of his daughter’s vocals), but letting the music speak alone for the entire 45 minutes will, I'm sure, communicate the album’s oft-sweeping mood shifts just as well – and perhaps manage to be even more transcendent and beautiful. Its arrival was perhaps inevitable, given that last year’s album was his first since 2005’s Another Day On Earth to predominantly feature vocals, and also considering how much it naturally still relies on Eno’s trademark instrumental ambience to convey much of its feeling. T-Rex – Rockin’ And Rollin’Īn instrumental version of his remarkably transcendent, achingly beautiful, pensive – and for that, critically acclaimed – 2022 album, FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE, this aptly named LP has ‘best album for remote working’ acclaim all over it. Re-released for RSD on Dark Horse records, you'll do a lot worse than to snap up this limited edition coloured vinyl pressing. Strummer dug deep to sprinkle some of his old Clash magic over Coma Girl (an ode to Glastonbury festival, where you can still find Strummerville), the country-blues of Long Shadow, anthemic rocker Arms Aloft, and a heartfelt version of Bob Marley's Redemption Song which exactly 20 years after first hearing this album, still makes us a little teary for the loss of a true genius. Streetcore, finished and released posthumously in 2003, is a great record to have gone out on. This felt like full-circle for the rockabilly-punk icon, and his return to musical form made Strummer's untimely demise hurt even more. The last two were released on Californian punk label Hellcat, home of Clash-influenced bands like Rancid. “We’ve been embraced so warmly all of these years,” Midlake’s Eric Pulido shares, “and knew our show at The Roundhouse would serve as the perfect night to celebrate our 20-year relationship with our first live album.” Taylor Swift – Folklore: The Long Pond Studio SessionsĪfter a number of self-described 'wilderness years' post-Clash, Joe Strummer formed The Mescaleros in 1999 and embarked a roll of three great albums before his death in 2002. The live double album is actually the indie rockers’ first, which spans its catalogue, featuring tracks from latest album For the Sake Of Bethel Woods, and ventures back through their direction-changing Antiphon (the first post-lead-singer-Tim-Smith record), their ‘very Midlake’ The Courage Of Others, and of course the die-hard classics from 2006’s The Trials Of Van Occupanther – ya Roscoes and Head Homes and whatnot. Luckily for people like me, and of course those who were able to attend the gig and dug it, the show – which was held to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary – is being pressed to coloured (side A red, side B orange) vinyl for Record Store Day for fans to live (and relive) in their living rooms. If I had to pick a London gig that I most yearned to be at last year – and trust me, there were many – it would be Midlake at the Roundhouse last April. This exclusive RSD release will be on crystal-clean vinyl, with its digital release following on 28th April and a full physical-format release in May. ![]() If the tracks on the Become EP are anything like the quality of OTM, though, it will be a must-own. Where Beach House are ‘going’ is anyone’s guess, as they are definitely one of those bands who seem to reliably make the same-sounding music – lush, expansive, stargazey – over and over but are somehow able to keep it fresh and enthralling with every release. “It’s not really where we are currently going, but it’s definitely somewhere we have been.” “To us, they are all kind of scuzzy and spacious, and live in the spirit realm,” says the band. ![]() (It certainly made my list of favourite albums of last year.) Beach House said they didn’t think these handful of tracks were a good fit for OTM, but later realised that they “fit in a little world of their own”. The Become EP comprises five songs from the studio sessions of Beach House's 2022 album Once Twice Melody, arguably the best and most beautiful yet from Baltimore’s dream-pop duo.

Vanderbilt grades and percentages12/30/2023 As an engineer, I can appreciate the value and importance of statistics, and therefore I tend to believe that the typical Gaussian (normal) distribution of grades is the most fair. With this philosophy, grade distribution should be a consideration for teachers. Luckily (for the students in that class at least), the concept of “grading on a curve” is frequently used to account for the fact that different professors expect different things from students. This should technically mean that the vast majority of the class only understood roughly 50 percent of the material, and the grades should reflect that. I’ve been in several classes where the average grade has been in the low 50’s. If two students learn the exact same material, but one takes a test written by a professor who expects a lot more out of his students, then their grades won’t reflect the fact that both students essentially have the same knowledge. The problem with this approach is the need to use grades as a means of comparing students’ academic success. If no one reaches that level, then, theoretically, no one should receive an A. The same should be true when a professor sets the bar for competence too high. If the bar is set low and all of the students excel, then everyone deserves an A, because the entire class learned exactly what they professor hoped they would learn. Therefore, grades are entirely dependent on where the professor sets that level of competence. Conversely, a lower grade is expected if the student does not reach that level. If a student reaches this level, they have demonstrated that they have learned what is necessary from the course and deserve an A. Tests are designed to gauge the amount of knowledge obtained by the student (or the ability to analyze and problem solve), and inherent in this concept is the idea that there is a certain level of competence that the professor expects. As such, I don’t feel like grade distributions should even be a consideration for a professor. Ideally, I believe that grades should be a reflection of a mastery of the material of the class. ![]() It may make many people happy in the short run, but it typically ends up doing more harm than good. However, as most students are fully aware, this is not actually a desirable outcome. With this frame of reference, a good grade distribution can be thought of, to some degree, as one that gives a large amount of As. As a result, students have grown accustomed to desiring a high mark, regardless of what that grade actually signifies. The current college admissions system stresses the importance of the grade itself. ![]() On one hand, like most students at Vanderbilt, I spent the majority of my high school career making As and Bs. I’ve thought about it a lot, and I still don’t feel I have a single, concrete answer. ![]() What is an appropriate grade distribution in class? When I glanced over a list of potential prompts for this blog post, this question instantly caught my eye. If you would like to contribute a guest post, please let us know. We recognize that everyone’s teaching context is different, but we hope that hearing others’ perspectives on teaching and learning will help our readers reflect on their own teaching. ![]() She later returns, succeeds in raising the department store, and Atlas (being Atlas…) reneges on their deal, drugs Elizabeth, and attempts to find out about the ace in the hole. Hey, it’s us! Better not let them see us because of paradoxes and stuff from the past from another universe! MULTIVERSE SHENANIGANS! Elizabeth uses a Lutece Device to go to Columbia and has the theory that by using one of the particles that keep Columbia afloat, she can make the Fontaine building float to the rest of the city as well. Elizabeth then has to find the “ace in the hole” that Suchong had developed for Fontaine and she finds out that Yi Suchong and Jeremiah Fink (from Columbia) had shared technology, co-developing the Big Daddies and the Songbird. Anyway, Atlas threatens to kill Sally which is why Elizabeth agrees to help him get him and his followers back to the city. It’s a bit complicated but after thinking very hard about it, it kind of made sense to me. She has these visions of Booker who instructs her how to talk to these guys and while she lost her omniscience, she still has Booker with her… who’s not really there but uh… Elizabeth effectively returned to a universe in Chapter 1 where she was killed which meant that all the other alternate versions of herself have collapsed, hence disabling her ability to open tears to other universes and removing her power to see through all tears. ![]() It kind of explains the story of Bioshock Infinite, or rather the beginning, as Booker called Elizabeth Anna for whatever reason… and he later killed Comstock but at the end, Elizabeth showed him that he’s actually Comstock himself… Anyway! Idyllic at first, in flames later!Ĭhapter 2, Elizabeth wakes from a nightmare of Paris in flames to find herself captured by Atlas (aka Frank Fontaine). After realising all of that again and remembering, Booker/Comstock apologizes to Elizabeth and she kills him using a Big Daddy. That one, Anna, would later become Elizabeth but it turns out that she died and Comstock had the Lutece twins send him to Rapture where he lost his memories and reassumed his identity of Booker DeWitt. Because he had no children, he enlisted the Lutece twins to help him secure an infant named Anna from another version of DeWitt. After all, Booker went by the name of Zachary Hale Comstock before and founded the floating city of Columbia. At Fontaine’s, we look for Sally, fight through hordes of crazed Fontaine followers, find Sally, and… we remember.įinally, we remember what happened after Bioshock Infinite. ![]() Either way, there we learn that Sally is not dead and that we can find her in the Fontaine Department Store – that place, however, was sunk and cut off by Andrew Ryan to serve as a prison for the followers of Frank Fontaine, his competitor that is believed dead. Since we’re Booker, we obviously take on the job, sneak our way into different shops to acquire a mask that grants us access to our favourite mad artist’s place where we confront Sander Cohen! I can’t believe he was mad before the events of Bioshock 1 as well. We have no recollection of the events of Bioshock Infinite and a more mature and hardboiled version of Elizabeth walks into our office asking us to look for a Little Sister called Sally and to rescue her. After the events of Bioshock Infinite and after a whole ordeal about billions of alternate universes and possibilities that all are connected, we essentially are back there in the role of Booker DeWitt taking up another job. Alas,… Infinite does glimpse at Rapture before the DLC btw.īIG FAT SPOILER WARNING! You’ve been warned.īurial at Sea Chapter 1 brings us back to Rapture on December 31st, 1958. ![]() What I do recommend however is to read my post on Bioshock 1 and Bioshock 2 because why not plug it here as well? Either way, in this post I’ll first go into the story/plot for Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 before I discuss gameplay stuff that I liked/disliked. If you haven’t played Bioshock Infinite’s Burial at Sea Chapter 1 and/or 2 yet, I highly recommend not reading ahead as there will be a lot of spoilers in regards to the story and all of that. Thanks a lot! Either way, Burial at Sea is essentially two extra chapters for the game that really round out the story… and because I felt like it deserved another post, I wanted to write about it as a 10.5 post, I guess? We did that on stream, and through the power of friendship and Twitch, someone gifted me the Burial at Sea DLCs for the full experience. So, back in May, I played through Bioshock Infinite and I loved it! It was great.

You may need to replace specific parts if fluid leaks or worn-out bands are not the cause of your transmission issue. Since worn-out or broken transmission bands can cause trouble in engaging the gear connected to the band, you’ll want to inspect your bands to find out if you need to replace them.
